BONUS POINTS AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

To recognise the importance of National Championships, 20 bonus "ranking points" per style danced in open events are now to be allocated. This reflects the higher standard at this level of competition. These "ranking points" are not allocated to graded events and do not affect in any way a competitors grade. These bonus points are purely for ranking.

AWARDS FOR RECREATIONAL PARTICIPATION FOR 2018

Recognising studios for increasing numbers

At the 2018 Australians, we saw the inaugural presentation of the top Registered Training Facility (RTF) Award. This was for achieving the highest participation rate in the Recreational category.

We are thrilled to see studios increasing the numbers in our grassroots competition.

The top RTF for each state in 2018 was:

  • New South Wales: Dynamic Dance World
  • Queensland: Learn 2 Dance
  • South Australia: Madeleine Dance Emporio
  • Tasmania: Palmer's Dance Studio
  • Victoria: Times Performing Arts Academy
  • Western Australia: The Star Ballroom and Function Centre

Thank you to Mark Gadsden for the photograph.

BREAK DANCING PROPOSED FOR PARIS 2024 OLYMPICS

Breaking down the barriers for DanceSport

Breaking (i.e. Break Dancing) has been proposed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

Breaking was a big hit at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina 2018.

From 2020, the Games host cities have the flexibility to nominate a limited number of additional sports.

For instance, the Tokyo Games in 2020 will include skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

See the WDSF press release.

NSW Schools Develop Program great success

NSW SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT

The value of early exposure to dance

Staff and parents are reporting children participating in the schools-dance program in NSW have developed greater:

  • Mutual respect
  • Confidence
  • Responsibility

Pathways to Growth

Unfortunately, not many people are aware DanceSport exists. Offering a school program accesses a wide audience. DSA encourages all studios to consider approaching schools.

Capitalise on Youth Olympics

School programs also provide a perfect pathway for the Youth Olympics.

Subsidised Dance workshops in Victoria

SUBSIDISED DANCE WORKSHOPS IN VIC

Promoting development in Victoria

DSV have decided to fund the following workshops for members for 2019. So far workshops running are or have been:

  • Dance Camp run by David Byrnes and Karla Gerbes (Februray)
  • International coach workshops held by Matt Rooke (March)
  • International coach workshops held by Jason Beaman (June)

The workshop organised by Jason Beaman - Outside Change has:

  • Hanna Karttunen & Angelo Madonia taking the classes
  • Saturday 8 Jun from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM
  • At MarShere Dance Studios Ferntree Gully.

This may exhaust the funding for 2019 but the committee will review later in the year depending on further requests received.

PARA DANCE SPORT TRIAL IN VICTORIA

Successful Come and Try Day

Many of us were moved and inspired by the Para Dance competition at the Australian Championships last December.

Therefore, DSV held a very successful 'Come and Try Day' at Royal Talbot Rehabilitation hospital in Kew.

Going 21 years strong

Since 1998 the sport has been in existence and governed by the IPC (International Paralympic Committee).

Thank you

We thank Judy Williams, Chair of DanceSport WA, who brought Para Dance to Australia.
