Welcome Gordon Gilkes, new President DSA

President's Message

Welcome Gordon Gilkes, new President DSA

Congratulations to our new President, Gordon Gilkes, who has taken over from Dallas Williams. Gordon is known for running a large schools program in NSW.

Dallas has now moved into the CEO role, with Steve Edwards still offering valuable support as General Secretary and National Registrar.

We thank Dallas for all the hard work he has done as the immediate past President. You only have had to have experienced DanceSport Live which Dallas created and has been rolled out internationally, to appreciate the talent and skill he has brought to DanceSport.

We also thank Steve for his dedication and hard work as CEO.

We are very excited about our new team and the skill set they bring to DanceSport.

For the new President's message

Adjudicators at the DanceSport Sydney Diamante 2018 NSW Open

Sydney Diamante NSW Open 2018

Stunning venue

The Round House at the University of NSW took the comp to another level of brilliance on Sunday 18 November. It's newly renovated, has beautiful ambience and wonderful facilities.

We were thrilled that Nicole and Neale Byrnes, were the recipients of the Chairman's award. Nicole and Neale contribute significantly to our industry and run a not-for-profit organisation called Dance Move Engage.

Excellent Sponsors

We had a wonderful range of sponsors, including:

  • Naming Rights Sponsor: Sydney Diamante (also sponsored 100 place-getters with Standard and Latin practice wear)
  • Product sponsors
    • Sydney Ballroom: sponsored the highest placed Junior Open couple over three styles, with return airfares to the Australians
    • Glamour Dance: sponsored every attendee with a discount shoe voucher

Thank you to all our competitors and generous sponsors. Read on here

Spectacular Salon Style Open Championship

Spectacular Salon Style Open Championship

Sunday 11 November 2018

There was a spectacular atmosphere at the SA Open in the prestigious William Magarey Room at the Adelaide Oval.

The audience enjoyed some stunning performances by:

  • Steven Grinsberg and Rachelle Plass - Professional Modern, and
  • Stefano Oliveri and Jessica Prince - Professional New Vogue

Excellent organisation

Sheree Holly and her team did a fine job organising the event, and Cushla Gillard led the way as the compere.

The running of an event doesn't happen without the volunteers, who work tirelessly. Without you and sponsors, such as Salon Style, DanceSport events would not happen.

Jan Reilly, adjudicator, with Geoff Vine at WA State open 2018 - LiveLighter WA Open Championship

LiveLighter WA Open Championship

Perth's most prestigious competitive ballroom event - Sat 27 October 2018

This event, sponsored by LiveLighter, showcased some of Australia's most exciting and talented DanceSport couples. Included were:

  • A group show-dance with dancers of all ages and levels of proficiency. The creative choreography fused the DanceSport styles
  • A showcase by Para-Dance, which was very moving

Excellent Organisation

Credit must go to the driving force of Judy Williams and her capable team. The event ran on time.

There were a number of interstate competitors, which indicates the stature this Championship holds in the DanceSport world.

We recommend all competitors visit Perth and, in fact, all interstate competitions for 2019. Enjoy a weekend away and the delights other cities have to offer. Lock it in your diaries!

Thank-you to long serving board members

To the outgoing office bearers across the states DSA acknowledges your dedication.

Some of these people have given over 10 years of service to DanceSport. In particular, Martyn Kibel of DSV, who, throughout his 15 years, has brought a professional attitude. Thank you Marty!

There is a lot of unseen effort that happens, such as applying for grants, meeting with government bodies, writing policies and strategic plans, managing government requirements, insurance, OH&S and gender equality, and then there is the important communication with our membership and their queries.
