It's A Wrap - Sunshine State Cup
DanceSport Queensland ran the Sunshine State Cup on 22 November 2020 at the Logan Metro Sports & Events Centre. The aim was to run a development event that would help Queensland members get back into competition mode. We used the opportunity to introduce a number of innovative ideas for this development event.
We were lucky to have the generous support of the Logan City Council, who sponsored the hire of the beautiful venue. There was plenty of space for dancing, and spectators were able to come and watch for free. Additionally, the event was live streamed for free so others could watch from home.
DanceSport Queensland was able to utilise government grant money to purchase speakers. The addition of these assets mean that DSQ now have their own complete PA system available to be used for events in the future.
In order to follow COVID Safe procedures, the event was split into three sessions - Masters were up first, followed by Under 16's in Session Two and Adult/U21 competitors rounded out the day in Session Three.
All events across the three sessions were single dances only. This unique offering meant that competitors could enter Open events without the need to have every dance ready - this was eagerly taken up by many.
The support from both competitors and spectators was overwhelming. Over 1000 events were entered - a record for Queensland! We had nearly 630 attendees over the three sessions held throughout the day.
Another unique part of the event was the Coach Incentive Scheme that was offered - each competitor nominated their Coach/es when they entered, and we were able to show support to our hardworking Coaches by giving back a portion of each entry fee.
We hope to run similar events in 2021 so we can continue to recognise the dedication of our Coaches to DanceSport, while also providing more opportunities for Queenslanders to dance.
