DanceSport Victoria News - August 2020

DanceSport Victoria News - August 2020

What a year 2020 has been so far!! DanceSport Victoria had many projects planned for this year but unfortunately Covid-19 had other ideas for us.

Throughout the last few months, DanceSport Victoria has been holding fortnightly meetings with, and for, all RTF's. This has given all RTF’s the opportunity to communicate in an open forum, sharing ideas and helping each other navigate the Covid-19 enforced closure of studios and cancellation of competitions.

We thank all the RTF’s that have participated in these meetings and for supporting each other and the industry. We will be continuing these meetings once we are back up and running as normal, as we have found them to be a great way of connecting and communicating with the Victorian RTF’s.

We would like to thank all the essential workers that have worked through this Covid-19 crisis. We are holding out hope that the numbers will drop here in Victoria and that we can run a few competitions before the end of the year. If it is allowed, we will do all we can to support these events.

Please stay connected to your studio and teachers, as we need these to come back to.

Stay safe,

Anna Longmore and Max Baker

DanceSport Victoria’ s Planned Projects and Promotions were:

International Travel Grant:

This Travel Grant comprised of two grants of up to $2,500 each, to assist two couples (one Ballroom, one Latin) participate in an international competition of their choice. Qualification was open to any couple that participated in the finals of the Amateur Adult Open Standard and Amateur Adult Open Latin events (and may include Under 21 and Masters 1 couples) at the following competitions:

ADS Ballarat DanceSport Festival, ADS Mornington Peninsula DanceSport Classic, Geelong Classic, Wangaratta Dance Festival and the ADS / DSV Bendigo DanceSport Classic.

Winners were to be announced at the Bendigo DanceSport Classic but the Grant was postponed due to the cancellation of events.  DSV will look to run this (or a similar promotion) in 2021.

Government House Performance

In 2019 DanceSport Victoria was invited to produce a performance at Victoria’s Government House. This performance was compered by Brent Olifent and choreographed by Jason Beaman. The Governor and Mr Howard loved the show and said it was one of the best Governor Performance shows they had hosted. They loved it so much that they were already talking about “next year’s” show! Unfortunately, the planned show for 2020 will not go ahead but it is something that we will definitely be looking at doing in 2021.

ParaDanceSport

After a successful training day in November, we were looking at holding more of these in 2020.  We also planned to have ParaDance participants compete in competitions throughout 2020. The plan was to purchase some sport wheelchairs for use of the RTF’s of Victoria for training purposes, but again had to be put on hold due to Covid restrictions.  Hopefully we can achieve this in 2021.

Seniors Inclusion

We obtained funding from the Victorian Government for both the ParaDance and Seniors Inclusion projects. Our plan was to run demonstrations in Aged Care and Seniors (Over 55s) accommodation venues.  From this, we then planned afternoon dances and encourage participants to pursue their dancing aspirations, possibly through studio and competition involvement.

Our first function was planned for late March – and then Covid-19 hit!  We will pursue this project in 2021.
