Rule Reminder - Approved Syllabus Information
What is the Approved Syllabus?
DanceSport has undergone many developments over the years, but one thing that remains intrinsic to its core is the understanding of basic technique.
The Approved Syllabus covers the fundamental figures contained in internationally accepted technique books.
As per DanceSport Australia competition rules, these figures are used for the choreography of routines for application to competitors whose priority should be on developing their basic understanding of technique.
Why have an Approved Syllabus?
Its purpose is to encourage dancers at grassroots level to concentrate on the development of their basic technical ability.
By drawing focus towards the basic figures during the formative period of their introduction to DanceSport, new competitors (in particular Juvenile competitors) can gain a strongly entrenched understanding of the technical aspects in all three styles. This knowledge becomes a solid foundation for a successful progression through the grades and assists in the mastery of more complex figures.
Who does the Approved Syllabus apply to?
- Juvenile – All events
- Junior – Individual Lead / Follow events
- Junior – Solo events – C and B Grade only
- Recreational Division – All events
Note: Combined Age Group events
For Under 16 combined age group events such as Junior/Juvenile, then the older age group rules are applicable.
E.g. Junior/Juvenile Open Couples events – Junior rules apply
Note: Cross-Divisional events
The Approved Syllabus rules are applicable to all Cross-Divisional events including ProAm, ProStudent and CoachStudent.
E.g. ProAm Juvenile events – Approved Syllabus as per Juvenile
CoachStudent Adult events – Amateur Division rules apply
