Introduction to DanceScore

A Scrutineering program is basically a database of all those items required to run a DanceSport Competition with the addition of an algorithm to apply the rules of Scrutineering. The DanceScore System is an extension to this basic scrutineering program that allows users the ability of fully automating the collection of Adjudicator's marks and the Results that follow.

The centre point of the DanceScore is the main Scrutineering module which when downloaded and extracted form the zip file will look some thing like: DanceScore V7-2-01.mde (zip file download is approx. 4mb)

This is a Microsoft Access file, it contains all the database tables and code to process results, import/export data (including HTML Result files for your website), create various running orders (timed and untimed) and produce outline files for a PowerPoint display. This main module also administers the data required for the Adjudicator Tablets.

You may use multiple PC on a network as the main module can be run in Terminal Mode which then shares data with your main PC/Laptop. The advantage of this configuration is that data is duplicated automatically from the 'Server' to the 'Terminal' providing greater redundancy.

Overview of the DanceScore System

Essentially the system comprises of 2 parts; the base DanceScore application which holds the database and processes Skating, AJS and other Items, and a Tablet component that allows the connection of Android Adjudicator devices.

There are other modules that connect to the DanceScore Application to increase functionality such as a Certificate Module, a Check-in Module and a MC (Compere) Module. All these are optional and the user can decide the configuration which is best for their purpose.

Design Intent

In essence a scrutineering program is simply a relational database with some code attached to calculate a specific result. Overly complicated applications can promote errors and cause confusion amongst operators.

A major design consideration was to provide Scrutineers (and Competition Organisers) with a package that was easy to install, operate on a wide variety of (low cost) equipment, and provide easy transfer data should the need arise.

A further consideration was ‘Future Proofing’. That is as programming platforms evolve it was necessary to select one that required little maintenance.

For this reason the base application has used the Microsoft Office platform, in particular Microsoft Access.

Why Microsoft Office? Microsoft Office is the world’s largest productivity suit with over 1.2 billion users. This large amount of users provides stability for both Microsoft and its users. Office applications have endured decades of development and is on every Windows PC.

Further, Office applications can be installed with local requirements such as languages and date formats providing assistance to non-English speaking users.

Also, Microsoft Access is part of the Microsoft Office 365 suit which offers multiple users/devices, always up-to-date, and 1TB of cloud storage. There is also an ‘Access Runtime’ package from Microsoft which allows the use of Access Applications … free of charge!
